Former Speaker Bill Howell Endorses Delegate Bob Thomas for Re-Election

STAFFORD, VA –Today, Former Speaker of the House Bill Howell endorsed Delegate Bob Thomas for re-election to Virginia’s 28th House of Delegates District.

“I’m supporting Bob Thomas because he has the integrity and character needed for the job,” said Speaker Howell.

Thomas said, “I’m extremely honored to have the continued support of Bill Howell. I am proud to call both Bill and Cessie great friends, and I am truly humbled to represent the District and people he served with honor and dignity for 30 years.”

Delegate Bob Thomas is a proud husband, father, small business owner, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and citizen legislator representing the 28th District, which includes parts of Stafford County and Fredericksburg City, in the Virginia House of Delegates. Prior to taking office on January 10, 2018, he served six years on the Stafford County Board of Supervisors representing the George Washington District.

William J. “Bill” Howell served as the Speaker of the House of Delegates from 2003 to 2018 making him one of the longest-serving Speakers in the history of the Commonwealth. During his tenure as Speaker, Virginia posted 10 budget surpluses totaling $2.5 billion. Under his leadership, the House of Delegates emphasized significant reforms in state government and strategic investments in higher education, economic development, and mental health services.  Other notable legislative achievements include a major transportation initiative passed with bipartisan support and state-funded incentives for land conservation.

He was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1987 and represented the 28th District for 30 years. In addition to his public service, Bill is also an attorney specializing in trust and estate law. He and his wife, Cessie, have been married for 52 years.
